by the Legendary DJ Disco Wiz

In conjunction with this year’s most talked-about concert, Madonna's “Sticky and Sweet” Tour, powerHouse Books launches MADONNA CONFESSIONS on Friday, October 24 from 8–11pm at The powerHouse Arena, 37 Main Street, Brooklyn.
MADONNA CONFESSIONS is the official book of photographs from the Material Girl's sold-out 2006 “Confessions” Tour, taken by manager Guy Oseary over the course of more than 50 performances around the world.

In over 250 never-before-seen images, the book showcases the tour’s various provocative themes, from an iconographic equestrian opening to an urban Bedouin segment, and on to glam punk and disco fever. The photographs celebrate what The New York Times calls "the sheer spectacularity of her physical form," along with show-stopping highlights and groundbreaking staging. Oseary traveled with Madonna for the entire tour, enjoying unprecedented access to each performance, and his photographs vividly capture the excitement and sheer energy that came alive onstage every night. The images in the book were personally selected by Madonna and Oseary and are interspersed with her lighthearted quotes from various performances.

Long considered one of the most exciting live performers of our time, Madonna shines in Madonna Confessions, a visual delight that showcases a crowning moment in the multi-Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee's astounding career.

Guy Oseary is the CEO of Maverick and Madonna’s manager. He has worked closely with Madonna for two decades. As Oseary was the only photographer allowed access to capture every single concert, this book contains the quintessential moments from the “Confessions” Tour.

Debuting in New Jersey on October 4, the Sticky and Sweet Tour schedule follows:

The intimacy and the sweep of the work put you front row center of an incredible experience,” comments Daniel Power, CEO of powerHouse Books.

Luis “DJ Disco Wiz” Cedeño, the first Latino hip hop DJ, is credited for being the first DJ to make a "mixed plate" in 1977 along with Grandmaster Caz. Wiz was a major contributor in the opening of the Experience Music Project in Seattle in 2000, and was instrumental in the making of Jim Fricke and Charlie Ahearn's Yes Yes Y'all (Da Capo Press, 2002). We are coordinating the next installments of Hip Hop meets Spoken Wordz for the Spring/Summer of 2008 in Los Angeles CA, Washington DC, Delaware, Detroit, Miami, Philadelphia/Delaware and Orlando Fl. We intend on having a Food and Clothing Drive for the local communities collecting non-perishable food items and lightly worn or new clothes. PRESS RELEASE

Third Annual International Hip-Hop Festival at Trinity College
Artists gather from around the world to make a difference through hip-hop

Hartford, Connecticut – The Trinity College Temple of Hip-Hop organization is hosting the third annual Trinity International Hip-Hop Festival on the weekend of April 4-6 at the Trinity College campus. Festival Sponsors include Trinity College, Nomadic Wax, Sol Productions, The Temple of Hip-Hop Kulture and World Hip-Hop Market. The event is free and open to the public.

The festival is the first and largest international hip-hop festival in the United States, blending the wisdom of “old school” pioneers with the passions of hip-hop musicians from all points of the globe with a mission of bringing people from all backgrounds and cultures to common ground.

Hip-hop garnered a lion’s share of negative publicity in 2007 – DJ Drama was arrested for selling mixtapes, Don Imus pointed a finger at hip hop’s misogyny and rapper T.I. was arrested on gun charges spawning a nationwide dialogue over the future of the culture. Among the highlights was the Trinity International Hip-Hop Festival, which was recognized world-wide. The event is sponsored and hosted by the first college chapter of the KRS-One created national organization, the Temple of Hip-Hop. Events and guests will include music artists, activists, pioneers, filmmakers, DJ’s, and graffiti writers.

Co-organizer and Trinity College student Zee Santiago said, “This is the first event of its kind that demonstrates how hip-hop has become an international culture as well as an accepted academic area of study.”

In past years, the College has hosted hip-hop luminaries such as Fab 5 Freddy; Jeff Chang, author of Can't Stop Won't Stop; Byron Hurt, director of Hip Hop: Beyond Beats & Rhymes; and Charlie Ahern, director of Wildstyle.

Schedule of Events

The 2008 festival will kick off Friday afternoon with a hip-hop theatre performance led by Baba Israel, and opening remarks from Trinity College President James F. Jones, Jr., and Dr. Xiangming Chen, the Dean of the Center for Urban and Global Studies. This will be followed by a keynote address from Bakari Kitwana (author of The Hip-Hop Generation and Why White Kids Love Hip Hop) entitled Can Hip-Hop Make the Transition from Cultural Movement to Political Power?

Artists scheduled to perform Friday night include Baba Israel (Australia/USA), La Bruja (Puerto Rico), Shokanti with Chachi and crew (Cape Verde), Abyssinian Creole (Seattle), Self-Suffice (Hartford), and a Senegalese “Super Crew” featuring several top Senegalese MCs backed by Nomadic Wax’s African Underground live band. The performances will be hosted by Canadian lyricist Eternia and Blitz the Ambassador (Ghana) backed by DJ Boo (of the Juggaknots).

Saturday’s activities will kick off with a panel discussion about the early years of hip-hop with old school pioneers Grandmaster Caz and Tony Tone from the Cold Crush Brothers, Grand Wizard Theodore and DJ Disco Wiz. Pop Master Fabel of the legendary Rock Steady Crew will host a 2-on-2 b-boy battle Saturday afternoon with music provided by DJ Disco Wiz and a $500 prize on the line. West coast crew and Trinity-alums Trust Your Struggle will present a graffiti workshop and collaborate with other invited artists to create an all new mural in the center of campus. The beat-making workshop will give budding producers tips on how to make hip-hop beats led by Connecticut production team Kemistree and Zaquan.

Saturday night’s performance schedule includes Zimbabwe Legit (Zimbabwe/USA), Sam the Kid (Portugal), Jewish emcee Y-Love (presented by Trinity College’s Hillel House), female super-group Anomolies, spoken word collective iLL-Literacy and Rebel Diaz (Chile/Puerto Rico). Performances will again be hosted by Eternia and Blitz with DJ Boo.

On Sunday, hip-hop educator Melissa Noel Green will present “The Art of Rhyme,” a workshop. Global hip-hop DJs will spin at the “Chill Out Lounge” during the course of all three days culminating with an open mic session for MCs on Sunday afternoon.

The event is free and open to the public. For details and schedule information, go to http://trinityhiphop.org, contact Zee Santiago (zee.santiago@gmail.com, 917-637-9004 or Jason Azevedo (jason.azevedo@gmail.com, 339-832-3260

Lady Osofly, Femi Shiri & Misnomer(S)
With special invited "novio" DJ Disco Wiz!

Lady Osofly is a Brooklyn-based collaboration between singer/songwriter Jessica Van Niel (Jae V), and Yarrow Lutz of the Feelmore Rocks Crew, an all woman Hip Hop collective based in the Bay Area. After working/performing together for over five years, Lady OsoFly is currently working on their debut album: a unique blend of soul, Hip Hop, folk, and jazz.

Femi Shiri: With soulful beats and beautiful vocals like a latter-day Billie Holliday, singer/songwriter Femi Shiri is rebirthing the movement of soul music. Having been described as “one woman band,” this New Jersey native developed a passion for singing at a young age. Catch Femi at such hotspots as SOB’s Sol Village or singing backup for several independent R&B artists.

Misnomer(S) are two unusual sisters. Though they are of marriageable age, they choose to live with each other and bang out hip hop that melds classical with hip hop with jazz, creating music that defies a need for genre identification. Knewdles is the rapper and producer. Sos is the violinist and co-producer.

DJ Disco Wiz is credited as being the first Latino Hip-Hop DJ, known for his aggressive battle style of DJing throughout the mid-to late1970s. Since, Wiz has contributed to the education and recognition of the early years of hip-hop as an activist, Hip-Hop pioneer, writer and poet. He is currently a board member of the Universal Federation for the Preservation of Hip Hop Culture and creator and founder of The Hip-Hop Meets Spoken Wordz Series.

Hip-Hop Heavyweights Take Over Orlando March 7-9th at Lounge Battles 6.
In today’s competitive world of hip-hop, only few have what it takes to stand out among the crowd. Whether its MCs, DJs, producers, or musicians, only one contest can decipher those worthy of recognition. Lounge Battles, Florida’s longest running hip-hop competition and festival, dedicates three days of intense competition toward extracting the talented from the undeserving. Hosted by Orlando’s prestigious battle MC Madd Illz, some of the nation’s best will present their hip-hop talents in front of industry executives, media outlets, and respected guest judges.

The first contest, the” 2-on-2 Street Battle,” will feature duos of quick-witted lyrical teams that must thrive on the demoralization of their opposition. This initial event will take place at Taste, which is located at 717 W. Smith St. in Orlando, Florida.

For the first time in the event’s six-year history, Lounge Battles will offer a “Battle of the Bands.” As a continuation of last year’s event, there will still be a “DJ Battle,” “Human Beatbox Battle,” and an individual “MC Battle.” Each of these events will take place on Saturday, March 8th at AKA Lounge. AKA Lounge is located at 68 W Pine St. in Orlando, Florida.

The final day of hip-hop festivities will feature the backbone of hip-hop: production. Some of the area’s hottest producers will attempt to glorify their abilities of beat-making by bestowing their unique and most interesting hip-hop creations. This concluding event will take place at Backbooth, which can be found at 37 W Pine St. in Downtown Orlando.

All winners will be compensated for their contributions, with prizes ranging anywhere from $100 to $1,000 in cash.

Tickets for this event are $30 in advance and $15 each day at the door. For tickets or for more information, please visit http://www.myspace.com/loungebattles or call Madd Illz at 407-435-4798.

Not only does it capture the emergence of a burgeoning culture but also the fashion and character of the surrounding community through rare photographs of MC's and DJs to records, flyers, and other ephemera.

ABOUT HIP HOP MEETS SPOKEN WORDZ -
The event is the brainchild of the Hip Hop pioneer, DJ Disco Wiz and activist, SueLye Guerra. In 2006, it was intended to aid in bridging the gap between spoken word performers and Hip Hop artists, joining them together to form the voice of the people. By the second annual Hip Hop Meets Spoken Wordz, on January 25, 2007 in La Pena de Bronx, the event proved much greater by answering that voice with over 500 coats collected as donations for the poor and given to the lgesia Espanola on 155 street and tinton avenue in the Bronx. This year, the event has already received tremendous support and is anticipated to be a success in catering to the needs of the local community.
