Sotomayor Nominated to Supreme Court

A few weeks ago, I blogged about Judge Sonia Sotomayor as a possible pick for the Supreme Court, and today Obama delivered, giving us our first Latina high court nominee, a Nuyorican from the Bronx. I don’t have too much to add other than I hope Judge Sotomayor’s confirmation proceeds smoothy, as she is considered a moderate.

Latino Soldiers Speak on Memorial Day

With so many Latinos serving in the armed forces, I thought it’d be appropriate to mention some of our accomplishments and talk to a couple active military members in honor of Memorial Day. Just a few years ago, our community felt the sting from being excluded from Ken Burns’ World War II documentary, The War. Burns overlooked nearly half a million Latinos who served the U.S. during WWII. Of course, we won’t do the same.

The Taco Truck War Continues

As the Latino population continues to grow so does the prevalence of taco trucks across the American landscape. However, they haven’t come without controversy much like the people who own and eat from them. Many local ordinances have tried to regulate taco trucks out of their communities’ existence, but in certain metropolitan areas, they still thrive.

Border Patrol Boy Scouts

Back in colonial times, the Spanish used Native American or Mestizo guards to watch over the other natives who were performing chores or working under the supervision of the Spanish conquistadors. Additionally, African-Americans were subjected to being “house slaves,” or those privileged enough to work in the master’s house while their less fortunate counterparts worked in the fields and outdoors.

Farm Workers Die in Fields

As the weather starts to warm up cruising toward the summer months, a big issue becomes apparent in the Latino community as it pertains to field workers and heat exhaustion. While many point to the efforts of the United Farm Workers and Cesar Chavez for helping to mobilize Latinos into politics, it seems that we are still fighting similar battles in the fields.

Catching Undocumented Criminals

One belief on both sides of the immigration debate that the majority of peopleagree on is that undocumented criminals should be deported. American jails and prisons are overcrowded as it is, and holding these people unnecessarily costs tax payers millions of dollars. And most can probably agree that the countries of origin for these law breakers should be where they are incarcerated.

Wal-Mart Sued for Racist Comment

Wal-Mart is an important retailer in the United States and especially in the Latino community because of its low prices. However, those low prices come with a bigger cost, especially when one considers where the goods were manufactured and in what kind of conditions they were produced in. Additionally, Wal-Mart faces controversies when it comes to the treatment of its Latino workers.

Homeownership Bust for Latinos

The recession has taken its toll and one thing apparent in the Latino community is that we have fallen victims to the foreclosure crisis. While we managed to make some gains in the last 12-14 years in terms of homeownership, we have been set back by the flailing economy.

Obama Should Sign Matthew Shepard Act

A little over a week ago a jury in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania found two teens not guilty in the beating death of Mexican immigrant Luis Ramirez. It had been alleged that the teens involved in this case yelled racial epithets at the victim during the beating. And this case is not without controversy as it was also alleged that the victim may have been a substance abuser or involved with an underage teen.
