It took more than a decade for Elan to release his debut, Together As One. After all, the labels were courting this intuitive and dynamic singer-songwriter not long after the L.A. native graduated from high school. But fate took him in another direction and he sang lead for the legendary reggae roots group, The Wailers, for three years. After his tenure ended, he went solo and was almost immediately signed to the London/Sire label where he spent a year and a half recording an unreleased album before the label got absorbed into another major. His debut, which was executive produced by No Doubt's Tony Kanal, features some of the most amazing musicians and producers in Jamaican reggae culture: Sly & Robbie, Fatis, Steve "Lenky" Marsden, Tony Kelly and DJ legend Cutty Ranks among them. His album features a unique combination of musical influences -- heavy on the island sounds and rhythms, but also incorporates elements of classic American R&B and soul; Fela Kuti-inspired African rhythms; and even '80s new wave pop.
