Lots going on in the world of soccer/futbol/football, with everything making news from quarantined stadiums to a Jesus-loving mid-fielder cracking the Times' 100 Most Influential List. So many stories so little blog; unless we cram the whole smorgasbord of info into one tight place like J. Lo fitting into a pair of skinny jeans. (Which reminds me – does she do anything anymore? If not, we may need to find a new big-bootyed Latina for our similes. I’m open to suggestions). OK, time to suck in those waistlines and make room for a healthy amount of futbol news.

If you love soccer (and who doesn’t in this country), then I have good news for you - yesterday ESPN unveiled the teams and schedule for the 2009 World Football Challenge. You might be thinking, “Ummm…OK, what’s the World Football Challenge?” (Don’t worry I had no idea either). While it kind of sounds like a soccer game for the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System (made by the same guys who did Baseball Stars), the WFC represents a U.S.

According to reports, David Beckham’s days in the MLS are over. What a shocker! Becks wants to stay at Italian giant AC Milan (he’s currently on loan) instead of returning to the L.A. Galaxy in March. Play for a European powerhouse on one of football’s biggest stages, or keep chasing around recent college grads and second-tier Euro talent in front of half-empty stadiums in Kansas City and Columbus?

My first soccer/football/futbol blog…finally! For years, I went around loving the “beautiful game” as a minority (not that kind), but now it looks like the sport might actually be gaining real popularity in the old U.S of A (it’s moved in front of the NHL on ESPN.com; also, for more on soccer’s rise in our country and the social implications check out this interesting column by Steve Wells of The Guardian).
