This Sat 7/21^st is a battle between two of the biggest underrated superstars in boxing history; Hopkins vs. Wright!! Although they do not get the publicity that a Felix Trinidad, Jermain Taylor, or an Oscar De La Hoya receives they’ve beaten them all…At least in my opinion.

Bernard Hopkins professional record is 47-4-1 & is in deed the most dangerous fighter in boxing.  Having come from the rough streets of Northern Philadelphia he was placed in the state penitentiary at age 17 for 56 months, he’s been beat up, stabbed, even shot at & still defied the odds.  He learned the sport of boxing in prison & was crowned the prison champ at age 23 (now that’s impressive).

After turning pro he destroyed Glen Johnson, William Joppy, Felix Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya (with a body blow), Antonio Tarver, (who knocked Roy Jones Jr. out twice) & lost two close decisions to Jermain Taylor (although any boxing fan knows he got robbed the first fight).

Now he faces Winky Wright arguably the most feared fighter in boxing.  Fighters were so scared of his amazing defense, southpaw stance, & jab (the best in boxing) that he had to travel over sees to France, Argentina, and England for fights.  He’s 50-3-1 and hasn’t lost in 8 years.

He has an awkward style that judges don’t award points for…Not getting hit squarely is what it’s called.  He’s twice beaten Sugar Shan Mosley (who beat Oscar De La Hoya twice) and destroyed Felix Trinidad but lost a decision to Fernando Vargas & some how was given a draw to Jermain Taylor (probably the worst decision in boxing since De La Hoya got robbed by Felix Trinidad).

Although I love both fighters & can’t wait to see these 2 icons go at it, the fight will most likely be a defensive war going the distance.  I’ll give the edge 2 my man Winky, he hasn’t lost in 8 yrs., I’ve never seen him hurt, Bernard’s 42yrs. old, and how can you not like a nickname like Winky in boxing?

Give me a freaking break!!!  I’m so sick of this story & people giving Barry shit all the time.  I personally don’t like Barry!  I don’t like his attitude, the way he treats people, the press, or even his teammates but to not give the man his props or have an asterisk next to his records is just plain CRAZY!!!

I don’t need Jason Giambi to tell me that Barry used performance enhancing drugs I’ve seen him develop and grow from weighing 170lbs. w/ the Pirates in 1986 to weighing 235lbs now!  It’s obvious he used!  The thing is you can’t discredit his accomplishments because of it.  In an era where we have larger stadiums, higher mounds, taller fences, & faster defensive players then the old days; he’s put up numbers that nobody back in the day can even come close to.

In regards to current players, he was absolutely not the only one using these performance enhancing drugs!  It’s been said that during that era nearly 70% of the players where using something.  The pitchers were throwing harder, the curveballs were spinning harder, and the hitters were using the same stuff(Palmero, McGwire, Canseco, Sosa, Gonzalez, Giambi, ect) so in essence it was a level playing field.  Yet, he somehow managed to hit 73 HR’s in a season, win 7 MVP awards (the 2^nd closest has 3 all-time), & 8 Gold Gloves, when no one else (on the same stuff) even came close to putting up those numbers.

Bottom line is the guy has great genes (son of All-Star Bobby Bonds, cousin of Reggie Jackson, and godson of Willie Mays) & worked hard at perfecting his craft.  He is simply the best player (BY FAR) in an era where everybody was cheating! 

So Selig, get your old butt to the stadium to witness the best player to come out of your reign as commissioner break Hank Aaron’s record & let him enjoy it until A-Rod breaks it in a few years.

As far as the greatest of all-time…Come on now Babe Ruth hit more HR's than 70% of the entire teams he played against during his time.  Bonds would have to hit 200HR in a single seaon to match that feat!!

So the fellas and I decided 2 go 2 Club Strata a few Saturdays ago.  Its located at 915 Broadway and 21^st. St.  Ladies are free till midnight guys free before 11:00pm on the coolout entertainment guestlist.  Now if you don’t know how the city works let me enlighten you real quick.  When a club says free 4 guys or free drinks b 4 a certain time they aint going 2 let u in until after that time!  That’s just the way it is, u gotta love NY, on the other hand girls r good 2 go, which is y us guys don’t give a fuck and end up paying $20 just 2 get in!

Anyways, Strata on Sat. nights is pretty good, but just like any club there’s pros and cons:

PROS

·        Nice location, near Club Deep, 40/40 Club, and Club Avalon just in case

·        Great music (Hip-Hop, Reggaeton, and top hits)

·        2 floors and when it gets packed they open up a 3^rd room

·        Have to dress up 2 get in so the girls r in their Sat. nights finest

·        Open until close 2 5:00am

·        Variety of women, Latino, White, Black, Asian, ect… 

CONS

·        Ur going 2 pay $20 regardless 2 get in

·        Small V.I.P section

·        Inconsistent, sometimes it’s poppin and other times its aight

·        Only one small bar on the main floor that is hard 2 get 2 when packed

·        Doesn’t get crowded till like 1:00am  

I personally like Strata on Sat. nights, it aint Club BLVD but it’s a nice curve ball every once in a while.  And although it’s a mixed crowd the ratio leans more towards a white crowd which isn’t a bad thing but the fellas love them some Latina women!! Can u really blame them tho?

If you really think about it getting to and past first base is the toughest part in any situation….baseball and relationships are prime examples.

If you know anything about baseball you breathe a hell of a lot easier once your team finally gets at least one baserunner, nobody wants to get “no hit” or a “perfect game” against them!

Same goes with relationships, why is it that once you get past first base (and by first base my definition is your first real kiss) with someone you’re interested in its smooth sailing from there.  Not sure if everybody feels this way but I do (maybe I’m just a good kisser I don’t know).

The reason I bring this up is because Chien Ming Wang had a perfect game going last Sun. (Fathers day against the Mets into the 4^th inn.) and I was with a friend talking about the same topic in relationships.

As soon as you get that first base runner on the flood gates seem to open up and once you get past that first kiss it’s on.  I’m not talking about that first sloppy, drunk, 2:00am at a night club with some random broad kiss cuz that doesn’t count and happens every night w/ no work put in at all.  I’m talking about that 1^st kiss w/ somebody you’re actually digging and took to a game or dinner, ect…

Needless to say I didn’t get past first base out of respect 4 a friend but the Yanks did finally win, and the Mets did finally get to first base but a little too late as the Yanks went on to win 8-2 and take the series 2 games to 3!

Up until this last 3 game stretch against the sorry as Rockies in which the best offense in all of baseball (Yanks) scored 5 runs in 3 games in Coors field the best hitters park in the league, the Yanks were playing the best baseball out there.  We finally got our pitching in order and our bats going yet even after that stretch we’re still 10.5 games behind Boston!

They’re def. going to make the playoffs (and I have $ on that, thanks Philly) but if it’s the wild card they’ll be playing the Angels and I hate 2 say it but they have the Yanks number.  They need to make a push 4 the division title so they play Cleveland or Detroit in the 1^st round!

Well we’ll see…I’ll keep plugging away on getting past 1^st base w/ chicks I actually like and the Yanks will keep plugging away at getting the first base runner on in order to score more than 5 runs in a freakin series!!  I’ll keep you posted!
