U.S. to Issue Travel Warning for MexicoPOSTED April, 27 2009 ![]() The U.S. plans to issue a travel warning to Mexico today in light of the swine flu outbreak, urging people to avoid non-necessary trips to the country. So far the flu has killed 103 people in Mexico and has been reported here in the U.S. Additionally, there has been a reported case of this flu strain in Spain. We are already seeing anti-immigration people use this illness as a way to disparage people from Mexico. Just yesterday on this blog, an anonymous commenter said, "Now your buddies are bringing disease into the U.S. and I assume you are alright with that. If it was up to me, I would close the border immediately. I know millions will be lost but thats better than being dead." A blogger at The Unapologetic Mexican has already warned us that using language to incite fear of people south of the border is common and unfortunate. The fact is that we live in a global society, and with international travel and trade, disease is bound to spread. There is no need to disparage a whole ethnic group or class of immigrants for this illness. Flu strains break out all over the world. In the spirit of helping and warning all people who read this blog, I encourage you to read this information about the swine flu. Wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your face and interacting in large crowds. President Obama is saying that this outbreak is not yet a cause for alarm, but just be cautious. |

Illnesses know no country or boundaries or nationalities. Its incredibly stupid to suggest a sector of the population or a country is guilty of infecting the world and on purpose to boot. Even more asinine to suggest that destroying communities and families is going to make a difference in the spread of disease. equal access to healthcare would make the biggest difference

" now your buddies are bringing in disease into the US" How stupid is that remark? I can only imagine the intellectual level of this idiot. Your advice to wash hands often is lost on this poor soul. I know others of this ilk and they are pathetic fools who place blame on illegals for everything. Maybe the virus was carried over by some college kid on spring break, which is about the right time for incubation. Makes more sense to me.

The CDC and other national and international governments don't know if the swine flu started in Mexico. What we are seeing is that it will hit harder those who have less or no health care and that this is another reason to decriminalize immigration status so that everyone in our communities, regardless of their immigration or citizenship status, can be protected. A pandemic will not ask for citizenship papers before striking or doesn't care about borders. Public health depends on everyone's health and well-being.
