New Report About Latinos & Abuse

Earlier this week, the Southern Poverty Law Center released a report, "Under Siege: Life for Low-Income Latinos in the South," which documented the experiences of 500 Latino immigrants in the South. Some of the findings revealed that these Latinos are "cheated out of wages, are denied basic health protection and fall victim to racial profiling."

This report comes just weeks after the Pew Center released another report showing how Latinos have less faith in the police and criminal justice system here in the US.

Some of the more disturbing findings in the report from the Southern Poverty Law Center include the following:

  • 41% surveyed said that they experienced wage theft by their employers
  • 47% indicated that they know someone who has been treated unfairly by the police
  • 77% of women surveyed indicated that they had been sexually harassed by bosses, many revealing that bosses used their immigration status as leverage for the abuse

The Southern Poverty Law Center also noted that these issues with abuse and discrimination aren't isolated to the South, but this area of the country was the focus of this report, as it has been an area where the Latino population has grown. The South is home to the nation's fastest growing Latino workforce in recent years.

Worth noting in commenting about this report, an advocate for the National Council of La Raza, Lisa Navarrete said, "This is not only a problem for Latinos but undermines all workers, undermines wages and conditions for all workers."

My thought is that this report will give Latino advocacy groups some ammunition in their fight for equality and better treatment in the South. With the deepening recession, the mistreatment of relative newcomers and ethnic minorities tends to worsen in the US. The South, in particular, has an ugly history of racism, which unfortunately is alive and well.

Yes and you sound like an illegal. Poor me, poor me! I'm a law abiding citizen who doesn't look to the Government to give them everything (cradle to grave). Hate to disappoint but I'm certainly not a listener of Rush Limbaugh and what's a "hallelujah Christian"? Do I believe in a higher power? Yes but rarely go to Church. Now your buddies are bringing disease into the U.S. and I assume you are alright with that. If it was up to me, I would close the border immediately. I know millions will be lost but thats better than being dead. I wish this site would lengthen the comment section.

Yes…you sound like a broken record. One of those records Rush Limbaugh plays on his radio show. I’m willing to bet you’re one of those so-called hallelujah Christians too. So what does make you?

If someone tries to cheat me, I know what avenues to use in order to get what I have earned. Again, I suspect they don't because they are illegal which is why the Southern Poverty Law Center is involved. I agree that working in the fields is extremely hard work and no I wouldn't do it. That is why I got an education so I wouldn't have to do that. If it is so bad, why don't they go back to their own country? I know I sound like a broken record but if you are here illegally, I have no sympathy for you. You have no standing complaining about laws being broken when you are breaking them.

It's about racism. By the way, there are very few people who can work in the fields - it is hard work.

Hey Anonymous @ 09:19…are you going to pick the fruit and vegetables on these farms, and risk getting cheated out of your wages? I didn’t think so.
