Mexico upset with Burger King Ad

An ad for the new Tex-Mex style Whopper isn't going over well with Mexican officials. The Burger King ad which is showing in Europe shows a tall, authoritative Texan with a short Mexican wrestler character teaming up to blend flavors of both cultures to create this fast food meal.

Mexico's Ambassador to Spain has stated in a letter to Burger King in Spain, "This advertisement denigrates the image of our country and uses improperly Mexico's national flag."

Mexico has expressed outrage before over the use of its flag when a nude Mexican pop star Paulina Rubio posed wrapped in a Mexican flag. Burger King's ad creators should have remembered that incident since it was rather recent.

My thought is that the ad is somewhat offensive, but on the other hand, Mexico has made a name for itself with the lucha libre style wresting. If the ad bothers you that much, don't eat at Burger King. You can see the ad here. Tell us here at SiTV what you think.

I have to agree that there are more important issues than a commercial that will be gone in a month. Focus needs to be on the people and their needs rather than a stupid commercial.

I am shocked Felipe Calderon’s government is even spending time on this. This just conveys the twisted priorities of a corrupt, self-serving Third World government, and the idiotic sensibilities of the Mexican social caste system.

I agree. The Burger King ads, along with the ad w/ the little person farming, have been (too?) edgy. I think they purposely made these controversial for more PR. It's got several people talking.

I also think it's ok to laugh at oneself. I didnt really see anything malicious here, just some extreme caricatures to describe a new product.

Is there no shame being a Third World country, and being content to be a Third World country completely absorbed by political corruption, absolute lawlessness, and slanted human values? Nearly 68% of Mexican citizens live in utter poverty, and Mexican government officials make no effort to establish livable wages, yet are offended enough to write letters to Burger King over a television commercial? Is Felipe Caldron’s administration that twisted and that maligned?

Burger King should pull this ad - it is not cute, not funny and it will remind me not to go to Burger King (I will also tell others not to go).
