10 Ways to Give Back on Thanksgiving

Even though the amount of food and family is overwhelming, it's important to give back this holiday season too.

By Adriana Maestas

While we've all heard conflicting stories on how the original Thanksgiving celebration played out and how the Natives were really treated, we can all agree that Thanksgiving is a time to reflect, be with family, and give thanks. In the spirit of change, SiTV.com has compiled a list of some other opportunities to express your gratitude by giving back.

1. Bank On It: With the flailing economy and rising food prices, many families are using food banks for the first time. Food banks around the country are reporting shortages of their food stock. Consider donating some items like rice, beans, canned and dry goods. This is something you can easily do when you grocery shop for yourself or your family. http://feedingamerica.org

2. Toys'R You: Many local charities ask for toys for poor families during the holidays. Brighten a child's holiday by providing a toy his or her parents cannot afford.

3. Adopt a Soldier: With the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and multiple deployments, there are plenty of opportunities to brighten a soldier's spirit. Often, they are in need of toiletries, candies, magazines (keep it classy), and socks. These young men and women love the extra motivation and appreciation from a total stranger who just wants to express thanks. http://www.adoptaussoldier.org

4. Turkey Run: Many cities have local 5K races or turkey trots where money raised goes to holiday charities. Running or walking in your local turkey trot will not only get in some much needed exercise, but you'll participate in a worthwhile cause.

5. Delightful Dècor: Many nursing and children's home facilities need help in making the environment more festive for the holidays. You can either donate extra decorations or help the staff deck the halls.

6. So Fresh, So Clean: Volunteer to clean up a local park, beach, or street. Many service organizations sponsor local clean ups on the weekends.

7. Bilingual Buddy: Become a conversational partner for immigrants who are trying to learn English. Learning English is so important for recent arrivals in our community. If you could donate a few hours a week to engaging with an ESL student, you will help someone become more English proficient.

8. Become a Big Sister or Big Brother: Usually, these commitments are for a year, but you'll have a wonderful opportunity to mentor a young person in need. http://www.bbbs.org

9. Droppin' Dimes: Dump your change in the Salvation Army kettles. You know it's the holiday season when you see the red Salvation Army kettles outside of local malls and shopping centers. http://www.salvationarmyusa.org

10. Blood In, Blood Out: Donate blood if you are healthy and able to the American Red Cross. Local blood banks often experience shortages during the holiday season because people are too busy to donate. The process is painless and quick, and you will help save a life. http://www.redcross.org/donate/give
