Bye Bye Borders?

I have to admit. I find this to be a rather sad story. Borders bookstores is up for sale and could be on the verge of going under.

In the last few years I've become quite a fan of books and bookstores, but by the looks of things I'm not in the majority. TV, movies, and video games seem to take the public's attention away from the joys of reading (which is ironic because all of those mediums are based on the written word) and numerous literary chains are starting to suffer. Borders is only the latest casualty (anyone remember Crown Books? Walden Books? B. Dalton?). Ok, maybe those are pretty old school, but the point is that a good bookstore is valuable to the community. It gives students a place to meet and study, it offers opportunities for new writers to have their works shown, and it educates your mind with access to millions of ideas, stories, and philosophies.

Obviously bookstores as a whole will never die, but the idea of Borders' 2-story knowledge/study/coffee center may now become a thing of the past.

I am sad! I go to borders by my job quite regualarly - it's where I go to escape and get inspired. What a sad state of affairs if this is only the beginning.
