PIMP C - R.I.P. - UGK'S ALBUM COVER SHOOT - THE DANIEL HASTINGS FILES.POSTED December, 05 2007 ![]() First and foremost, my condolences and prayers go to PIMP C's family, friends and Hip-Hop.. This musical genius is leaving behind a legacy and big shoes to fill. He was half of legendary duo U.G.K. The “Under Ground Kingz” and I had the pleasure of work with him. What does Art Directing entitles? Many of you know me as a photographer and filmmaker. Well, Art Directing is a bit different, specially for me. As an Art Director the first thing I do is put my camera away. I let the photographer do his job and activate my creative juices up a notch. I make sure “creatively” all the elements work towards one vision. I collaborate with the Artist, Management and Label to come out with an outstanding photoshot, image and package design. When Jive called me, they were very nervous cause the shoot was in less than a week, in N.Y. then it got switch to Texas. Plus, they weren’t able to get a concrete concept/idea for the cover from the group. There was none or little communication between the Group and the Label (A common thing that happens in the music industry). So last minute who they call? Yup!!! Your boy Daniel Hastings. I felt like Harvey Keitel's character in Pulp Fiction “Mr. Wolf" the one that got sent by Marseleis to clean shit up, cause it was a mess. Nobody was talking to nobody, and the shoot was in days. When I arrived in Texas, I called everyone involved in the shoot and produced the hell of a photoshoot along side talented photographer Clay Patrick Mcbride and his production team. Then flew back to NY for post production. I hired one of my Top Dogs in the graphic design game Mr. David Irlanda. I brought him the elements we shot in Texas and I told him exactly what I was looking for. I actually went into a different direction from what the group wanted, it was a gamble, but when Pimp C saw it he flipped out so much, he scrapped the other album concept he had and went with what I invisioned, The UGK Underground Kingz cover: Funny Story: During the shoot, I remember we were recreating a sting operation, like UGK was being watched by the D.E.A. But instead of drug bundles, they were CD bundles. So they needed an authentic looking Drug Cartel “JEFE”, a real “Pablo Escobar” in the flesh, a True "Tony Montana" that lives up to the Scarface name. I remember aproaching PIMP C as he was speaking about this idea and he points at me… and says.. "You Daniel, You are perfect". It just so happened that I had my Colorful Guayabera on, not that I dress like a Colombian Druglord or look like one, Do I?. (I know, I was totally stereotyped) but I played the hell of a CD Smuggler/Druglord. Check me out… That’s acting Y’all!!! And those are CD bundles, OK!!! PIMP C - R.I.P. |
