'Notorious' Out, Big Pun Gets No Love

Yes, I’m from Brooklyn. Yes, I’m a Biggie Smalls fan (if you called him “Notorious B.I.G.” then you weren’t down). Yes, I’ll probably drag my wife to see Notorious this weekend. But there was another massive MC I loved, pause! Big Pun of course. The late Puerto Rican legend broke down doors for Latinos in hip-hop but isn’t remembered as much as Big or 2Pac. His widow Liza Rios recently spoke to Soul Pitch Hustle (thanks JB @ UD) and she feels the same way. See here.

There are two reasons Pun isn’t revered as Big and Pac. First, he was Latino and being an olive-skinned person in rap music is tougher than leather. Secondly, Big Moon Dog was a wife batterer. As much as he was a virtuoso on the mic he pistol whipped his wife on camera (unbeknownst to him). Yet, he wasn’t the only mastermind to have d-bag tendencies—Miles Davis used to leave his women kind of black and blue also. So, cheers to Biggie but respect is way overdue for Pun for being an ill lyricist.
