What Kind of Wedding?POSTED June, 30 2009 ![]() I have never dreamed of getting married. Nope. I’ve just never been into it. Funny thing is, it’s not the actual marriage part that I have an aversion to, it’s the actual planning of a wedding. I am not the girl who wants to walk down the aisle knowing I spent a year of planning and a small fortune on my big day. I was thinking more along the lines of Italy: maybe Positano, the beach, 10 friends and family, and renting a wonderful condo overlooking the ocean for a week. That sounds like a fun getaway that we will all remember, right? But recently a friend made a good point. She said, “Of course you want to have a big wedding! It’s not just for you. It’s for your family and friends. It’s one of the only times in your life that they have an excuse to all come together and have a great time in your honor!” I think she has a point. So I’m starting to entertain the idea of having a more traditional wedding in the future. Problem is, what is traditional these days? I’m half Hispanic/half Asian…and I grew up Catholic. I’m pretty sure my parents would like to see a traditional Catholic wedding held at a church in Santa Fe, but what if the guy I marry isn’t Catholic? I started thinking about the guys I’ve dated and I realized that I never considered that they might want to have what they consider a “traditional wedding”. So how would that work? A friend of mine said he’s been to weddings where one person was Indian and the other wasn’t. Most of them ended up having two different ceremonies—one traditional, white gown style and the other bright and colorful Hindu style. That seems like it would be fun I suppose…except trying to coordinate the guests. Now, if that would have been a Latino marrying an Indian, I’m pretty sure they would have only needed one ceremony since it all turns into one big party at the end anyway. I do chuckle at the thought of it. What cuisine would we serve? What music would we play? What would everyone wear…and who’s family would drink more?! I think it would be a good time. Maybe a disaster, but a good time anyway.
