Twitter Search

Kamren C. sent me a link to Geek Pick Up Lines on Twitter yesterday and now I’m obsessed. Not with the geeks, with the search option.

See, I’m already into Twitter.  At first I didn’t think it would take off because who wants to hear about the mundane things that people do? But as soon as I started, I was hooked. I actually do like hearing what my friends are up to, mundane or not. It makes me feel like I’m keeping up with them better.

Sometimes people tweet that they’re having lunch, “Corner deli. Turkey and swiss cheese. Yum”  and you think, “wow, I might go get a turkey sandwich too.” Others keep you updated on the topic of a seminar they’re attending…others let you know how a party is going…and some send out links to really important articles or dates for sample sales.

No matter what the content is, it’s at the very least a good topic starter: “So, you saw Claire Danes at the Burberry party? Is she still pretty?” or “I hate when I get headaches. Next time just take Advil…that always helps.”

I mean, I honestly didn’t just know that stuff about my friends before Twitter. They wouldn’t text me to say they have a headache or that there was a celeb spotting (unless it was a celeb that I’m in love with).

There are downsides to Twittering--Like maybe the fact that you can’t really lie about your whereabouts. If you’re playing hookie at work, might be best not to mention that you’re “working on your tan at the beach” or “having lunch with the new cute guy.”

Oh, and there is the possibility that someone “bad” is following you. I mean, out of the 1000+ “followers” I have, I’m not sure who most of them are. So, maybe skimp on some of the personal details? Besides keeping weirdos off your back, it might be good to keep some secrets from the office peeps right?

Anyway, but back to Twitter “Search”. My new obsession. Turns out, you can type just about anything into the search and a long list will pop up with random tweets from random people who mentioned that person, place, thing, word…you get it.

I might make it a daily habit—type in 5 different words a day and see what comes up.
My words for Thursday, June 11th are:

-Love: Too commonly used. Realizing people use love to express how they feel about everything nowadays.

-New York: Oh wow, I just found out some guy with the username Mr_Joshua is in the FlatIron district looking to meet up with people. Lets see if he’s cute.

-Existentialism: I know this one is random. Just thought it would be interesting, but turns out, not really. Just realized that lots of people don’t use the word correctly though. Whoops!

-Rhinocerous: Did you know this animal is one of the most endangered on earth? I did, but I guess thanks for the reminder?

-Dirty Sanchez: Now this is interesting. Looks like a guy named @Sneekatak just figured out what this means. Haha. I’m sure he’s a better person now.

Now I know what kinds of words I should "search" for the next few days...
