Miss USA Goes Gay?

If you watched the Miss USA competition last night, you might have caught Miss California 2009 saying she believes that marriage is between a man and a woman after celeb blogger, Perez Hilton, asked her opinion on it.
Her answer obviously caused quite a stir among the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) set…and the supporters of gay marriage. Especially because it was the night after the Gay Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Awards in Los Angeles.
I happened to attend the GLAAD awards on Saturday and saw them present the award for Outstanding Spanish-Language TV Journalism – Newsmagazine to "A juzgar por las apariencias" y "En otro cuerpo" by Aquí y Ahora. The producer of the segment and the sister of a young transgender Latina who was murdered for being different received the award on stage and talked about the issue of hate crimes and inequality that also affects the Latino population.

So I can understand why Perez Hilton was so upset about Miss California’s answer on gay marriage. There’s no doubt that I believe in equal rights for everyone and full protection of our citizens by the law and our government, but at the same time Perez…you can’t fault a girl for expressing her views? Maybe she wasn’t diplomatic enough by saying “No offense”, but I’m sure she isn’t the type to discriminate. Was she saying she doesn’t believe in equal rights? I don’t think so. I think she was stumped and didn’t know how to articulate her opinion without losing the crown. And why throw such a hot question at the poor girl anyway? It’s Miss USA for goodness sake.

Perez wasn’t very eloquent with his reaction either…he posted a video message about it just minutes later and actually called her a dumb bitch. Not cool.

Check out the videos below. What are your thoughts on this issue? Oh, and by the way, did you know that Barefoot Wine is the unofficial Gay Wine? I found that out at the GLAAD awards too!

I was on CNN HLN tonight corresponding w/Perez Hilton and I think Miss CA's answer lost her the crown.
Susan and I competed at Miss Amer. and know the stresses of a national stage. However, under that kind of pressure proves whether you are ready for that big of a media job. She isn't being hired to be a political or moral personality - she is a face of an organization - her JOB is to grow the organization and to gain sponsors. By alienating half of the pageant supporters, she is a potential detriment to the program. The right girl always wins.
Great opinion, wrong stage.

Listen, maybe she does discriminate.I don't know her thoughts. But I can also say that I've been up on a similar stage--Miss America...and when you're asked a tough question, it's hard to come up with a diplomatic answer on the spot. I have a feeling she doesn't mean same-sex couples shouldn't have rights...I think she's really talking about the definition of marriage. She goes to Christian school...ya know?

But at the same time...I'm curious to hear everyone's thoughts on the difference between Marriage and Civil Unions. Think they are the same thing? Different? Discriminate? Let me know!

Of course she's the type to discriminate, she said so herself, live on national tv -- that she believes in different rights for different people. She was raised that way, she says. Whether you take her side or not, that's what she said.

Free country, whatever, and you can give her kudos for speaking her mind, but if she got up there and asserted that one ethnic group shouldn't be given the same rights as everyone else in the country, would you still be congratulating her for speaking her mind? Maybe, I don't know.

Perez may be abrasive and obnoxious, but he makes a good point.

If you listen closely, you will realize she doesn't answer the question, which is about equal rights and who should decide, not her personal opinions on marriage.
