Holiday Office Party Do's & Don'tsPOSTED December, 08 2008 ![]() Latinos love an excuse to party, especially when the boss is footing the bill. Even though most fiestas this year will be modest due to the economic downturn, you'll still get to enjoy free appetizers. Perhaps even a whole meal! Let's face it though, while you should definitely enjoy yourself at the company party, it's best to leave the "No, I didn't!" moments for loved ones. While they may equally judge you, at least they won't fire you. SiTV.com has your list of office party do's and don'ts to ensure you won't be searching for jobs on Craigslist the next morning.
Do Dress Sharp: This is the one time of the year when the big bosses come out to play, so dress to impress. Slip on your Sunday best and let the thought of climbing up the career ladder guide you. Just remember, first impressions are everything and your threads are the first things people see. Save the miniskirts, spandex and homie gear for the club. Don't Bring Your Familia: This may be taboo, but having your mom or tía accompany you to the holiday party is not a good idea. First, ask if you're allowed to invite a guest because most companies budget for employees only. Once that is confirmed, you should only bring a date or close friend (primos are cool). You'll be able to gossip with someone outside of the company and remain professional at the same time. Do Avoid Xerox Machines: Sometimes the best part of the company holiday party is the stories swapped the next day. We've heard them all: "John from the mailroom and Lisa from accounting hooked up!" "Paul's moves were hilarious. Does he really call that dancing?" and "Sandra from the front desk got wasted!" It's all fun and games unless your name comes up. Being the star of the morning mitote could put your reputation in danger or worse, it could cost you your job. In other words, keep your butt away from any copy machines during the office party. Don't Be A Freeloader: Our parents raised us to not waste anything, especially if it was free. If it was all-you-can-eat, we made damn sure to get seconds and take home a doggy bag. If we didn't pay for it, we were taking it—food, drinks, the chili pepper shaker at Domino's—(kinda free)...you get the picture. But remember, not everything our parents taught us is right. The company holiday party is not the time to get wasted or chow down. More importantly, do not hide the silverware in your date's purse, even if you are tempted to take home a souvenir. Do Leave At A Decent Time: You should never leave the company party too early. It comes across as ungrateful. However, closing down the bar sends the wrong message too. We know it's easy to get carried away when you're having a good time, but this is one of those situations where you show your face, mingle, y ya esta! If the night still feels young to you, move somewhere else with your date. Besides, it's easier to relax away from co-workers.
